Sweet relief

Well, we're through. But the only people who will have been worried / scared by that display is Sven, his staff and his players. And us.

I don't think Jermaine Jenas is going to play a single minute at this world cup. Jermaine Defoe must be weeping. He would have played off the bench in both of the England games, I reckon.

Defoe might have played, but JJ won't be alone in not getting a game - he's there as insurance, as are others.

Ah, no matter how often we get told that the England team is chock-full of world class players (and I've never quite believed that one myself), it does tell you a lot about the strength of the squad when Jermaine Jenas is the insurance policy.

I don't understand why we kept so many players at the back when it was clear that T&T were going to be playing with limited ambition.

Then again..... having seen how many chances they did manage to create, perhaps we should play with MORE defenders.

I also hate the way ALL our players go back for corners - even against a side like this. It just means that the opposition can push more players forwards and that even when we clear the ball, it just comes straight back. Keep a player like Owen on the halfway line, and they will have to keep a couple of defenders back.

Rubbish.

...but we won.

Given the way Robinson was flapping at everything and Ashley Cole seems to fall over every time anyone so much as looks at him, I think it's just as well they had so many men back.

I don't understand the fuss. It looked like a normal England qualifying match against a team mostly concerned with defending-type of performance, same as Austria and Wales in the qualifiers (and we know how these things can go wrong). I don't think you can judge what might happen against a better team from it, because they seem to raise their game when they come up against one (Argentina, say).
